Not many police forces can lay claim to having a fleet of supercars—a McClaren, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Ferrari—at their disposal, but that’s what the Dubai police have. And, as stated in this short documentary on them by Vocativ, they can also boast that they have the fastest police car on the planet.
That car is a $1.6 million Bugatti Veyron which can hit 267mph and go from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Perfect, you might think, for high speed Michael Bay-style car chases involving fleeing criminals, but that’s not the purpose of these cars at all.
Instead they’re used for PR (i know, what a total waste), paraded around luxury shopping malls, hotels, and the beach as a way to bridge the gap between Dubai police, the public, and tourists, breaking down the barriers and stopping people fearing the cops.
Judging from the way people gawp at these luxurious cars and eagerly snap pictures of them on their phones, it seems to be working. It’s not exactly Miami Vice but it’s still pretty cool.
It’s almost worth getting arrested for and getting a ride to the police station. Maybe.
